If you are searching for a used Volkswagen Beetle one of the best ways to distinguish between the newer and older Beetles is to use the word Classic in your search terms for the older Beetles.

For the first couple of years after the Beetle was re introduced with a front engine people referred to them as the New Beetle, but now most people refer to the front engine Beetle as a VW Beetle and the older rear engine versions as the Classic VW Beetle.

While looking at used Volkswagen Beetles one question almost always arises for the novice Beetle fan.

What is the difference between the Super Beetle and the standard Beetle?

There are several differences depending on the year model, but there are only a couple absolute ways to tell the difference.

The Super Beetle has a MacPherson Strut front end.
The spare tire lays flat.

Other ways that some people believe tell the difference are not accurate, such as.

ALL Super Beetles have a rounded windshield.
There are louvres on the front apron.
Full size padded dashboard.

While it is true that these 3 things occur only in Super Beetles, the first 2 years of production the Super Beetle had the same flat windshield and flat dashboard as all Beetles to that point. The louvres on the front apron were used on different Beetles depending on versions with Air Conditioners.

So the best way to tell the difference between a Super Beetle and a standard Beetle is the front suspension. If it has MacPherson Struts, it is a Super Beetle.

One of the ways to tell when an old car was built well and parts are available is to just look around and pay attention to how many you see on the road today. Typically the VW Beetle still has a large showing on the road.
